The general consensus, when BMW revealed it was taking a concept to preview their vision of a luxury future to the Beijing Motor Show, was that it would be the first look at a new, range-topping BMW 9-Series. But it’s not. In fact, the BMW Vision Future Luxury Concept is a preview of next year’s new BMW 7 Series and previews both the design and technology we can expect when BMW rolls out its challenger to the new Mercedes S Class in 2015.

We’ve always believed that the best use for hybrid powertrains is to get extra performance without the penalty of increased fuel consumption. Toyota, on the other hand, have primarily used their impressive – if complicated and expensive – hybrid powertrains to yield improved economy and emissions from more prosaic cars like the Prius, Yaris and Auris. But now it looks like Toyota are ready to show us what hybrid technology can offer in the way of performance too, with a tease for what Toyota are calling the Hybrid-R Concept, which appears to be a Yaris with more than 400bhp on tap.

The hugely appealing Ferrari 458 Spider has made its UK debut at the 2012 Goodwood Festival of Speed alongside the new, more powerful California – the Ferrari California 30. The new 458 Spider – which, if you could still see the engine at the back, would make you wonder who would still but the 458 Coupe – gets a very clever, fully retractable aluminium hard top which is a full 25kg lighter than a comparable cloth top.
